23 Chambers in One Room!

Friday, May 14th, 2010

The First Annual Affiliates Luncheon was held on Thursday, May 13 at the impressive Hy-Vee Conference Center in West Des Moines. Hundreds attended to make connections that count, catch up with old friends, and make new ones.

The Chamber introduced their new branding, Belong, Connect, Achieve, which is a fantastic way to connect members, businesses, and individuals in the community.  Check out their new website and testimonials.

The guest speaker on innovation in business through creativity and improvisation, John Sweeney, presented on Innovation at the Speed of Laughter. Out of the improvisation and exercises to help reconnect with that youthful artist, dreamer, and instigator, the thought that stuck with me is that athletes practice continually and execute occasionally. Notice how we as business people execute…execute…execute?

The West Des Moines Chamber hosted a fantastic event and pulled off an impressive feat, getting 23 chambers in one room!

Martha Willits Visits Downtown and West Side Chambers

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Greater Des Moines Partnership President/CEO Martha Willits joined the joint West Side and Downtown Chamber Luncheon today to talk about maximizing membership in your Chamber.

Willits reminded members that every chamber is a member of the Partnership and can take part in educational events including today’s Small to Big purchasing meetings, regional business after hours, and the annual legislative trip to Washington D.C. in June.

There has been a great deal of success in the region in the past decade and the Partnership continues to look at what is happening regionally and nationally, to position our community for success.

Member spotlight: Rita McGinnis – Joseph Jewelers

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

RitaTell me about Josephs Jewelers.

Two years ago downtown Josephs moved it’s location to 215 10th Street, street level in the new Davis Brown Tower Building. The store offers free parking to their customers in the building and it is also connected to the skywalk. Josephs Jewelers consists of three family-owned and operated jewelry stores in the Greater Des Moines area. For nearly 140 years, Josephs stands out in the jewelry industry with their standards of ethics, quality, professionalism and education. Offering quality merchandise at competitive prices with unmatched personal services Josephs offers the downtown employees a treasure for their gift or self-purchasing. From a $25 silver necklace to the several thousand-dollar diamond, we are here for you.

Why do you enjoy being downtown?

I have a sense of pride because the original Josephs was downtown. In my 30 years with Josephs, I have seen downtown make significant improvements in areas of work, play, living, education and beautification

What is the best professional advice you have received?

Be enthusiastic and optimistic. If you are passionate about what you are doing, others will catch your enthusiasm and get involved.

What constitutes a good life?

Give more than you receive and remember to have some fun.

What do you read?

The daily Register, trade and fashion magazines and occasionally a leadership book or biography.

Why did you become a member of the Downtown Chamber?

There is a synergy of a blend of ages and talents in the people downtown…the Chamber is an example of this.

Who is a person people should get to know downtown?

The entire sales staff at downtown Josephs.

Finish this sentence: Downtown is…

…moving ahead with the right foot forward.
